Home Business Scams And Their Warning Signs
In these tough and uncertain economic times, it may be really tempting to work from home in your spare time as a way of making a little extra cash. However, you’ve got to be extremely careful that you don’t wind up falling into a scam that could cost you time, money, or your freedom. Here are three warning indicators that you may be involved with a home business scam rather than a legitimate work-from-home employment opportunity.
Number one: you have to provide your bank account numbers or other personal information. If an employer wants you to work from home, they may very well ask you for your social security number for income tax purposes. This is not too unusual. However, they will never ask you for personal information such as bank account numbers, your mother’s maiden name, how long you’ve owned your home, etc. as a condition for employment. You’ll know it’s a home business scam when they seem more interested in getting information FROM you rather than giving tasks TO you.
Schemes that involve you recruiting other members are the most popular scams out there. These are called pyramid schemes or multilevel marketing. Unless you have a workaholic attitude and a lot of impressionable friends, you will always be at the bottom of the pyramid. The only people that get rich are the people that started the scam. You could lose a lot of money with a scheme like this.
It is hard to imagine that people would actually fall for those Nigerian email scams, but they do. Some people have lost the entire contents of their bank account falling for these scams. No legitimate person will ask you to deposit money for them. There is no situation where this is necessary. Stay far, far away from anyone who asks you to do this.
Legitimate companies will not solicit or spam. They donat need to. If you are contacted by someone with the chances to live the lifestyle you have only dreamed of, you are being scammed. Did you apply for that position? No. Usually when they send out these aoffersa you donat even know what you will be doing. You could lose a lot of money dealing with these people.
There are a few legitimate home-based business opportunities out there, but you always have to seek them out. If you’re a website designer or medical transcriptionist, for example, you can often work from the comfort of your own home. But these are always jobs that you have to seek out; they will not just be dropped on your plate. And when you do seek out a home based work opportunity, you must be extremely careful and a do a little bit of research first.
The internet can make the research easy though. Check the Better Business Bureauas website. Also, conduct a search and see what others have to say. Sometimes this is the best information. If others have been scammed by a particular opportunity, you can usually find their stories posted somewhere.
Sometimes offers are very tempting just to try, but be very careful. Just remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it is. If they are asking you to do anything that is considered unethical, you are dealing with a shady company.
